Privacy-friendly website statistics with Umami
Order Umami, sign in and change the default password, add your website, place the tracking script and read the dashboard. No cookies needed.
Umami shows you how many people visit your website, where they come from and which pages they read. It works without cookies and does not store personal data about your visitors. This guide covers ordering, the first login, adding your site and reading the numbers.
What you need
- A Headpat Space account with a verified email address and your billing details filled in.
- A website where you can edit the HTML, or a CMS or site builder that lets you add a script to the
<head>.
1. Order Umami
- Sign in to the panel, open Apps in the sidebar and click Create App.
- Under Template, search for Umami and select it.
- Under Package, choose the package that fits you. You can switch to another package later.
- Under Details, fill in a Display name, for example "Statistics". If a Version field is shown, leave it on Latest (recommended).
- Tick the box confirming that provisioning may start right away, click Deploy app and complete the payment.
The app and its database are set up automatically. The very first start can take a few minutes, because Umami prepares its database. On the app page, the Access card shows the address of your Umami. Wait until it says HTTPS active, then click Open.
2. Sign in and change the default password
Umami starts with a standard admin account that is the same for every new installation. The panel does not generate a login of its own for this app.
- On the login page, enter the username
adminand the passwordumami. - Open your profile settings. Depending on the Umami version you find them behind the profile icon or under Settings.
- Click Change password, enter the current password and a new, strong password twice, and save.
Do this straight away. The default password is public knowledge, and your login page is reachable from the internet. Store the new password in a password manager. The panel cannot show it or reset it for you.
The names in this guide are those of the English interface. Where exactly a button sits differs a little between Umami versions.
3. Add your website
- Open Settings and go to Websites. In newer versions, Websites is a page of its own.
- Click Add website.
- Under Name, enter a name you recognize, for example "My shop".
- Under Domain, enter the domain without
https://, for exampleexample.com. - Click Save.
You can add as many websites as you like and view each one separately.
4. Place the tracking script
- In the list of websites, open the settings of your site, for example with Edit next to it.
- Find Tracking code there.
- Copy the code. It looks like this:
<script defer src="https://YOUR-UMAMI-ADDRESS/script.js" data-website-id="YOUR-WEBSITE-ID"></script>
- Paste it into the
<head>of every page you want to measure, just before</head>.
Where that is depends on how your site is built:
- Plain HTML: paste the line into each HTML file, or into the shared header template.
- WordPress: use the header settings of your theme or a plugin for header scripts. Do not edit theme files directly, because an update overwrites them.
- Other CMS and site builders: look for a setting called "custom code", "header code" or "code injection".
Open your website in a browser afterwards and click through a few pages. Within a few seconds your own visit shows up under Realtime in Umami.
5. Read the dashboard
Open Websites and open your site, for example with View next to it.
The bar at the top shows the key figures for the selected period:
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Views | How many pages were loaded in total |
| Visits | How many sessions there were. One visit can contain several views |
| Visitors | How many different people came |
| Bounce rate | The share of visits that saw only one page |
| Visit duration | How long a visit lasted on average |
Below that you find the details:
- Pages: which pages are read most.
- Referrers: the sites that sent visitors to you, such as search engines or social media.
- Browsers, OS and Devices: what your visitors use. Handy for deciding what to test.
- Countries: where your visitors are.
Use the date selector to switch between today, the last 7 days, the last 30 days or a range of your own. Click any row, such as a page or a referrer, to filter the whole dashboard on it.
Good to know
- No cookie banner needed for Umami itself: it sets no cookies and stores no personal data. Other tools on your site may still need one.
- Ad blockers: some block analytics scripts, including self-hosted ones. Your numbers are therefore a little lower than reality.
- Your own visits: they count too. To exclude yourself, open your website, open the browser console and run
localStorage.setItem("umami.disabled", 1). - Own domain: you can run Umami on an address like
stats.example.com. See Connect your own domain to an app. If the script should load from that address too, open Umami there, copy the tracking code again and replace it on your site. - Backups: all statistics live in the database of the app, which the panel backs up for you. See Back up and restore your app.
