LXC containers
A Linux container with root access that shares the host's kernel. There is no virtual hardware in between, so it costs less than a VM of the same size.

Brackets stack: each unit is billed at the price of the bracket it falls into, so the first units cost the most.
What you get
- Less overhead
- No hypervisor and no emulated hardware, so more of what you pay for goes to your software.
- No kernel of your own
- You can't load your own kernel or kernel modules. If you need that, a VM is the better fit.
- Resize while it runs
- CPU and memory changes apply without a restart. Storage can grow, but not shrink.
- Kept apart
- Processes, network and filesystem are isolated from every other container on the host.
- Your own IP address
- With the optional IPv4 address the container gets its own public IP; firewall, DNS and routing are yours to set up.
Good for
- Small services
- One service per container, each with its own limits, without paying for a VM for each.
- CI runners
- Build agents that start quickly and cost less than a full VM.
- Test environments
- Staging and QA setups you delete once you're done with them.
- Web applications
- Node.js, Python, PHP or Go apps with full control and little overhead.
