Give friends access to your game server
Add friends or co-admins as sub-users to your game server and choose exactly what they may do, without sharing your password.
You do not have to be online every time the server needs a restart. With sub-users you give friends or co-admins access to one game server in the panel, and you decide exactly what they may do. They sign in with their own account, so you never share your password.
How it works
- A sub-user is another Headpat Space account that gets access to one of your game servers.
- The server stays yours. The subscription and the invoices stay on your account, and Switch game and Change plan are only shown to you.
What you need
- Your friend needs their own Headpat Space account. Signing up is free. Ask them for the email address of that account, because you add them by email.
Add a sub-user
- Sign in to the panel, open Game Servers and click your server.
- Click Subusers at the top of the server page.
- Click Add subuser.
- Under Email, enter the email address of your friend's account.
- Under Permissions, tick what they may do. A sensible set is already selected: the console, starting and stopping, viewing files, and viewing, creating and downloading backups.
- Click Add.
There is no invitation to accept. Your friend has access right away: the server appears under Game Servers in their own panel, next to their own servers. Let them know yourself that you added them.
If the panel says there is no account for that email address, your friend has not signed up yet or uses a different address.
Which permissions exist
The permissions are sorted into groups. With Grant all you tick a whole group, with Clear group you empty it. All and None at the top do the same for the whole list. You have to select at least one permission.
| Group | Permissions | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| Power & console | Use console, Start, Stop, Restart | See the live console, send commands and control the server |
| Files | List, Read content, Create, Edit, Delete, Archive / extract | Browse, open, upload, change and remove files, and zip or unzip them |
| Backups | View, Create, Delete, Download, Restore | Work with the backups of the server |
| Network | View, Add, Edit notes / set primary, Delete | Manage the extra ports of the server |
| Startup & variables | View, Edit variables, Change docker image | See and change the startup settings, such as the game version |
| Server settings | Rename, Reinstall | Rename the server or run the installer again |
| Subusers | View, Add, Edit permissions, Remove | See who else has access to the server |
A few things to know:
- A page only shows up for someone who may view it. Give List together with the other file permissions, and View together with the other backup, network or startup permissions.
- Only you as the owner can add, change or remove sub-users, whatever is ticked in the Subusers group. With View, someone can see the list.
- Schedules and SFTP access cannot be handed out. A sub-user uploads files through Files in the panel, for which they need Create.
Which permissions should you give?
Give people what they need and nothing more. Two examples:
- A friend who restarts the server when it hangs: only Power & console.
- A co-admin who installs plugins or mods: Power & console, the Files group, and View, Create and Download under Backups.
Be careful with these three:
- Restore under Backups replaces all current files with the backup.
- Reinstall under Server settings runs the installer over your files again.
- Delete under Files removes files immediately, and that cannot be undone.
Whoever may use the console can run every server command, including stopping the server or making themselves operator in a game like Minecraft. Only give console access to people you trust.
Change someone's permissions
- Open Subusers on the server page. Each row shows the email address and the number of permissions.
- Click the pencil icon in the row of the person.
- Tick or untick the permissions and click Save.
Remove a sub-user
- Open Subusers on the server page.
- Click the bin icon in the row of the person.
- Confirm with Remove.
They lose access to this server immediately. Their own account is not deleted, and their own servers are not affected.
Tips for safe sharing
- Ask your friends to switch on two-factor authentication on their account. Accounts that use it get a
2FAlabel in your list. - Make a backup before you let someone new work on your server: see Back up and restore your game server.
If something does not work
- Your friend misses a button: the matching permission is not ticked. Open Subusers, click the pencil icon and add it.
- Your friend wants to upload large files: SFTP is only available to you as the owner. Upload the files yourself: see Upload files to your game server with SFTP.
