Proximity voice chat for Among Us with BetterCrewLink
Run your own BetterCrewLink voice server so your Among Us group hears whoever stands nearby. Order it, start it, point everyone's BetterCrewLink at it and help players who hear nobody.
BetterCrewLink is a free proximity voice chat for Among Us. You hear the players standing close to you in the game, and the ones further away get quieter until they fall silent. A voice server introduces the players of a lobby to each other, then the voices go straight from player to player. BetterCrewLink comes with a public voice server; this guide sets up your own.
BetterCrewLink reads the game on each player's computer, so it works on the official Among Us servers and on your own Among Us server alike.
What you need
- A Headpat Space account with a verified email address and your billing details filled in.
- Among Us and BetterCrewLink on the computer of everyone who plays.
1. Order the voice server
- Sign in to the panel, open Game Servers in the sidebar and click New server.
- Under 1. Pick a game, choose Among Us.
- Under 2. Pick a variant, choose BetterCrewlink.
- Under 3. Pick a location, choose the location closest to your players.
- Under 4. Configure resources, set CPU, RAM and disk. The recommended values are already selected.
- Under 5. Name and finalize, give the server a name.
- Under Game settings, fill in Server name. Leave Github branch on
master, and leave Domain, Use HTTPS and Path to SSL empty. - Click Continue to checkout and pay. You land on the page of your new server, where the installation starts on its own.
2. Start the server
The server does not start by itself after the installation. Watch the Console until the installer is done, then click Start under Server actions. It is ready when the console shows BetterCrewLink Server started and the status shows Running.
3. Point BetterCrewLink at your server
The Address card on the server page shows the Host and the Port. The address of your voice server is both together with http:// in front, like http://203.0.113.10:20015.
Everyone in your group does this once:
- Open BetterCrewLink, open Settings and find the Advanced section.
- Click Change Voice Server, enter the address and click Confirm.
Everyone in a lobby has to use the same voice server. Someone on a different voice server still joins the lobby in Among Us, but hears nobody and nobody hears them.
4. If someone hears nobody
Some networks do not allow direct connections between players, for example some mobile and company networks. The player on such a network turns on NAT Fix in the Advanced section of the BetterCrewLink settings. That player's voice then runs through the relay server of the BetterCrewLink project instead of straight to the other players, which adds a little delay. The relay is run by BetterCrewLink, not by us.
Your voice server has no relay of its own: a relay needs a separate network port for every voice connection, and a game server comes with only a few.
If something does not work
- BetterCrewLink cannot reach the voice server: check that the status is Running, that the address starts with
http://(nothttps://) and that host and port match the Address card. - The server stops right after starting: read the last lines in the Console. If Use HTTPS under Startup has a value, empty it, click Save next to it and start the server again.
- Everyone is connected, but some players hear nobody: check that everyone uses the same voice server, then turn on NAT Fix for those players (step 4).
